Hello everybody and welcome to this blog. In this blog, I will be writing about the previous match I went to, where the Adelaide Strikers took on the Brisbane Heat in the 17th match of the 2025/26 BBL Season. I will be recapping my thoughts, and the match, and my overall review based on whether you should come to the match.
First of all, before I start writing, I would like to point out two things. Firstly, this was my first time going to the Adelaide Oval and watching a BBL Match, so I was definitely excited and my reactions may be a bit more positive than a person who has came to multiple matches. Secondly, this match was on New Years Eve, so it was a nearly packed out crowd of 50,000 people, and had special perks which other matches wouldn’t have such as a firework show, and a concert by the band called “Birds of Tokyo” after, so there was definitely a lot of anticipation. So, without further to do, let’s start my review
When I reached the Adelaide Oval, at around 6:00pm, everything was buzzing. Due to it being summer, the sunlight was still bright, and there were thousands of people at and around the ground due to the various events that were happening later that night, including fireworks and concerts outside the Adelaide Oval, but the main spectacle was the match that was being played. The Strikers and Heat previously played against each other a couple of days before this clash at the Gabba, with the Heat winning a nail-biting match by 7 runs, so the anticipation for the match was high, along with the show, and the fact that Chris Lynn of the Adelaide Strikers had the opportunity to break the record for the most runs scored in BBL history against his former team.
After scanning our tickets amid the huge rush, and leaving the outside of the stadium, which had a merch shop selling Strikers jerseys, we entered the stadium, and a picturesque view greeted us. As we walked forward, the sight of the beautiful Adelaide Oval greeted our eyes, with the greenest grass I had ever seen and beautiful architecture. The Strikers players were warming up to field, as they had won the bat toss and chosen to do so before we arrived. After locating our seat section (139), row (V) and seats, we sat down. Immediately, although they weren’t the best seats in the house, they were close to the field, with view of half of the stadium. The image below shows how my view of the stadium was.
The only downside of the seat was that it was directly in the sun, so either bring some sunglasses, or a hat to stop the intense rays from blinding you. I was already thrilled and extremely happy to be in the Adelaide Oval, but the prematch got even better. As they announced each player, they came out with fire and smoke popping, and the pre-match show was excellent. Maybe it’s something that happened at each BBL match — but still, for me it was a special occasion knowing it was my first time.
So, the match started, and so did the Adelaide bowling show. After a couple of singles to start the first over, Liam Scott broke through with a crucial first wicket of Colin Munro after he hit a poorly timed shot with no power straight to Jamie Overton. And as soon as Colin got out, I felt the energy – the different Adelaide energy. Although it is a smaller city compared to the other ones in Australia, everyone in the stadium got out of their seats and started cheering loudly – and I have to say I think that performance effected the strikers positively. After a couple of wickets, the dangerous Matthew Renshaw, who led the most runs in BBL this season came out, and got a ramp shot for 4 on his first ball. However, fielding heroics from the one and only Chris Lynn saw arguably the most dangerous batter leaving the field for 6 runs. Wickets fell like flies, and at the halfway point, there was only 1 six hit in the game. 1. Just over the halfway point, the Heat were 47/6, until some reinforcements from Xavier Bartlett (19 of 10) and Matthew Kuhnemann (31 of 22) made sure that the heat avoided an embarrassing score. Eventually, the heat were all bowled out for 121 in 19.4 overs.
At the halfway break, I decided to explore the Adelaide Oval. One thing that immediately stood out was how much there was to do apart from just watching the cricket. There were food stalls all around the ground, selling everything from hot chips and burgers to ice cream and cold drinks, which was perfect considering the heat. Even with close to 50,000 people in attendance, the stadium felt well organised and easy to move around, which added to the overall experience.
Soon enough, it was time for the Adelaide Strikers to begin their chase of 122 runs. The crowd was confident but still cautious, knowing that T20 cricket can change quickly. The Strikers started calmly, focusing on rotating the strike rather than taking unnecessary risks. Every boundary was met with loud cheers, and the atmosphere remained electric throughout the innings.
Chris Lynn, who had a lot of attention on him due to his chance to break the BBL all-time run-scoring record against his former team, received huge applause every time he touched the ball. While the Heat tried to apply pressure with the ball, the Strikers always seemed in control of the chase. The target was never out of reach, and the crowd could sense that a Strikers victory was approaching.
Eventually, Adelaide chased down the total comfortably, sealing a convincing win and sending the home crowd into celebration. As soon as the match ended, the focus quickly shifted to the New Year’s Eve celebrations, with an impressive fireworks display lighting up the sky above Adelaide Oval. The post-match concert by Birds of Tokyo was the perfect way to end both the match and the year, making the night feel like much more than just a cricket game.
Overall, my experience at BBL Match 17 between the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat was unforgettable. From the atmosphere and the quality of cricket to the New Year’s Eve entertainment, it was absolutely worth attending. If you enjoy cricket combined with an incredible crowd and entertainment, I would highly recommend attending a BBL match at Adelaide Oval.
