How to prepare for the IGNITE test

Hello guys and welcome to this blog. In this blog, I will be telling you about how to prepare for the IGNITE test-which tuitions to go to, what to practice, and some tips and tricks to remember.

Which Tuition?

Every year over 700 children in SA sit to compete in the IGNITE program. Many tuitions know this and they market the various packages that they are going to give as the one to attend to get into the IGNITE course. However, some of them are lying, and if you want to know which tuition center to send your child to for the IGNITE and Scholarship/ACER test, check out the blog in the description, where I compared two of the biggest tuition centers in Australia, North Shore, and PreUni. I concluded that North Shore is the tuition to send your child to. Not only does it have history to show for it, landing five of the top eight IGNITE spots in 2023, but it has the material that challenges the brain and is IGNITE-proof.

What to practice?

Although tuition, whatever one you select, gives you plenty of material and homework, it is important to sit down and revise some of your own. Practice logical mathematical thinking questions including open-ended questions. Explain your thinking with every question and step. Although this may seem like a treacherous journey, it will help you. Do multiple AMC and Maths Olympiad practice tests, as they are similar formats to the test on the day. Cover every subject in math so you know the basics ranging from Algebra (although we didn’t receive any questions in algebra) to shapes and angles. Next comes English Comprehension. Read various text articles, like non-fiction, magazines, myths, informative, persuasive, and many more. Ask someone else to write open-ended questions where you have to write your own answers and remember to QUOTE the place in the text where you got the information from as it will help you on the day, due to many open-ended questions asking you where you got the answer from. English writing is similar to reading comprehension. Practice how to write different styles of texts and study them carefully. When practicing, choose abstract images – a bucket of pain, some marbles rolling, a scenery. Add character depth, various narrative devices (similes, metaphors, oxymorons), and vocabulary. Ask an older sibling to mark you on each aspect of your writing, e.g. vocabulary, storyline, character depth, and ask for feedback. Lastly, Abstract reasoning. Search on youtube Abstract Reasoning, and you will find many UCAT courses, a person called CareerVidz, and many other people that will teach you how to tackle these problems. When practicing these, I recommend you do it in a test style. No distractions, a timer, and in a room. This will greatly benefit you.

Tips and Tricks

  1. In writing, try to think of an idea that you think no one else has thought about
  2. Read each statement/question TWICE
  3. Focus on your test
  4. Do not fret if you think you did badly on a subject, move on to the next one
  5. Take ample time for Reading Comprehension
  6. Use the elimination method a lot
  7. Read over reading comprehension texts multiple times.
  8. In Reading Comprehension, give each paragraph  a subheading and go to that paragraph based on the specific question
