How to Ace the IGNITE/ACER Test: 3 Essential Tips for Success

If your child is gearing up for the IGNITE/ACER test, you understand the importance of helping them prepare thoroughly. These assessments, designed for gifted and talented students, evaluate not just academic knowledge but also the ability to apply that knowledge creatively and effectively in challenging situations.

Whether you’re just starting the preparation process or looking to enhance your strategy, here are three essential tips to help your child approach the IGNITE/ACER test with confidence and success.

Hi, my name is Mahad Ali and I am a student in year 8 in Glenunga’s IGNITE program. Not only did I get into the IGNITE program, but I also got a scholarship to PAC. In these series, you can see ways on how to maximise your chances to get into the IGNITE program. Additionally, you can check out my youtube channel which is on the IGNITE/ACER section for more tips!

1. Understand the Test Structure

Before diving into the study material, it’s crucial to familiarize your child with the test’s structure. The IGNITE/ACER test generally includes:

English: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.

Math: Problem-solving, reasoning, and advanced concepts like algebra and geometry. General Ability: Logical thinking, patterns, and reasoning. Writing: Crafting a creative response to a given topic. Knowing the test format will help reduce surprises on test day and allow your child more time to practice the content.

2. Develop Problem-Solving Skills

Many questions on the IGNITE/ACER test require reasoning and problem-solving rather than simple memorization. Encourage your child to tackle problems from various perspectives and practice breaking down complex questions into smaller, manageable parts.

For example, when working on math problems, guide them to first understand what the question is asking and which formula or concept applies, rather than jumping straight into calculations. This strategic approach will help them save time during the test.

3. Regular Practice with Timed Mock Tests

One of the most effective ways for your child to prepare for any test is to simulate real test conditions. Set aside time each week for your child to practice tests in a timed setting. This will not only enhance their knowledge but also improve their time management skills, which are crucial for performing well on the IGNITE/ACER test.
