A couple of days ago, Sammy, an 8 year old boy with an inoperable brain tumor, finally completed his dream. With his death looming over him, and only a couple of months left to live, Sammy wanted to fulfill his dream of becoming a policeman – or at least experiencing one day like it. The community of South Australia stood up and gathered celebrities, such as Alex Carey and Sebastian Guy, who posed as “criminals’ ‘ for Sammy to “arrest’ ‘ and put in jail, making one of Sammy’s goals true, just before his unfortunate passing.
Sammy’s story is just not an inspirational one, it is one that applies to all of us. Whether your doctor gives you an estimate on how long you are going to live, or it happens out of the blue, all of us are eventually going to pass away. But I, along with various other people believe that Sammy’s story is different. Being so young, diagnosed with a tumor that doctors have identified as untreatable, and living your last period of your life in the hospital must be heartbreaking. But not for Sammy, and here is where we can learn from him. Apart from his willingness to achieve his goal, which he has yearned for so much, his lesson also teaches us about things we don’t realize. His story teaches us how we take things for granted, whether big or small. We can take one example directly from his story; living. Majority of us definitely take living for granted. Some of us think that we are entitled to live, while others actually hate living. But when life comes closer and our death is right around the corner, everything becomes real. We need to change this stigmation about life, and be grateful for it. Sammy, as shown in the picture, is smiling. We know that he knows that death is near, but his smile shows his gratefulness for life. Another thing that all of us need to be better at is being grateful that we are not in Sammy’s shoes. Sammy would’ve been destined to have a fabulous life, whether in the Police force or the world. But, just one diagnosis changed his life. We should be grateful that we aren’t experiencing the amount of pain – through surgery, realizing that his overall dreams cannot be fulfilled, and also his parents’ overall pain, that their son who they have nurtured for so long will slip away through their eyes. These are just some of the important lessons we can learn.0
Another thing that I want to reflect on is how this can apply to our lives. Sammy’s story can apply to many real life situations. For example, this article can help various people who actually have life-changing infections such as Cancer, Tumors, or injuries. This story can greatly inspire them to live their last part of their life happily, or go through their treatment grateful. Another way that Sammy’s story can inspire us is to look at life positively and as I explained before, to develop gratefulness. The last aspect that I want to touch on that I have ignored is about the community and the people that were involved in this. This even shows the side of humans not displayed that regularly – being supportive and kind. I believe that this is the kind of heavier people need to encourage and implement themselves. The people who made this possible – and the celebrities deserve a pat on the back for this, because frankly without their help a young boy who should’ve lived for more wouldn’t have accomplished his dream and spent the last of his life happy.
I hope you liked this article, which highlighted gratefulness.
