What are New Year resolutions and how to make them and keep them?

Introduction

New Years. A word that marks the start of a new year, 365 more days of living. The new year also marks celebration, welcoming and farewelling the previous year, reflecting on the plenty of up and downs. But apart from fireworks and celebrations, there is another big word that marks new year – resolutions. Apart from being ridiculously hard to spell, resolutions sometimes play a massive role in our lives. (IF WE FOLLOW THEM). But first, what are resolutions?

What are New Years Resolutions?

Resolutions have various meanings depending on their context. In the context we’re using today, ‘resolution’ means in my own words ‘making small or big achievable goals for yourself to follow’ and in the New Year context, you want to follow the goal you make for the rest of the year – possibly for more time. Constructive resolutions are made from looking back at the previous year/s and looking at what you want to improve in your life, to make it better/ Some people make small resolution goals like ‘eating 3 fruits per day’ or ‘focusing on their work for 1 hour per day’. Other people make more substantial goals which require greater sacrifice like ‘managing work and family together’ or ‘try and get a new promotion in their job.’ So now we’ve cleaned up what resolutions are, and I’ve given you some examples, how should we make resolutions, and more importantly, how should we keep practicing them?

How to create New Year resolutions

Creating new year resolution goals are easy – you just need the right steps. The first step that I will give you, and that I have already told you is to focus on goals you need help with. For example, if you’re scared of the dark, try to put that on your new year resolution list instead of adding going to the gym three times a week if you already go one time per week. The next tip is making the goal achievable. This is probably one of the most ignored parts of making resolutions. Lots of people’s goals may be to start a startup company or start earning $200,000/year. Even though people love ambitions goals, make goals that are REALISTIC. Make sure that they can be done comfortably with your best effort in the timeframe you select, not half-heartedly. So maybe instead of saying you could start a startup company within one year, a more achievable goal would be doing it withing two, three or maybe four years. The next step is making small steps that you can do to achieve the goal. For example, if you want to go to the gym two times per week, your steps may be: 1. Find a close by gym 2. Get a membership 3. Convince yourself to go 4. Find suitable times 5. Get gear 6. Go to the gym. Obviously depending on what your goals are, some goals could take longer to write down step by step, but it’s still important you do it.

How to Keep New Year resolution goals?

Now let’s move on to how to keep the goals. The first tip here for keeping your goals is having a reward system. What kind of reward do you like? A movie with some friends, video game time, a shopping spree? Well, after you complete some of your goal, you can treat yourself to a treat of your choice. For example, from last paragraph, if we wanted to make a startup business, even one month of you building your business productively, you can have a reward of your own. This can motivate you to truly do your best. (There is one exemption. If your resolution was to end something, you can’t do it as a reward. Like if you wanted to quit smoking, you can’t smoke as a reward).  The second tip I want to give you is to write down your goals. You can either design it on Canva, or an A3 piece of paper. After that, stick it on a place where you visit often. Then you will be reminded of your goals and become more convinced to work harder on them. The last goal I want to share with you is always put reminders. By putting reminders, you can get reminded whenever you get off task. There are many apps such as Calendars or Reminders that you use, just to name a few. If you don’t have a device, you can ask a friend or family member to check in on you.
